The return values are consistent with the corresponding functions:

save that the concluding <<NULL>> is not counted.
<<viprintf>> and <<vfiprintf>> return the number of characters transmitted.
If an error occurs, <<viprintf>> and <<vfiprintf>> return <<EOF>> and
