Johannes Schindelin 07ea90a5d2 Cygwin: Do not show Error dialogs by default
...in a non-Cygwin child process. Backported from MSYS2.
Downstream commit message follows.

In https://github.com/msys2/msys2-runtime/pull/18, we discussed a change
that would allow default Windows error handling of spawned processes to
kick in (such as registered JIT debuggers). We even agreed that it would
make sense to hide this functionality behind a flag, `winjitdebug`.

However, when this got upstreamed as 21ec498d7f (cygwin: use
CREATE_DEFAULT_ERROR_MODE in spawn, 2020-12-09), that flag was deemed
unnecessary.

But it would appear that it _is_ necessary: As reported in
https://github.com/msys2/MSYS2-packages/pull/2414#issuecomment-810841296
this new behavior is pretty disruptive e.g. in CI scenarios.

So let's introduce that `winjitdebug` flag (settable via the environment
variable `MSYS`) at long last.

Corinna Vinschen ca2a4ec243 Cygwin: execve: drop argument size limit
Before commit 44f73c5a62 ("Cygwin: Fix segfalt when too many command
line args are specified.") we had no actual argument size limit, except
for the fact that the child process created another copy of the argv
array on the stack, which could result in a stack overflow and a
subsequent SEGV. Commit 44f73c5a62 changed that by allocating the
additional argv array via malloc, and it introduced a new SC_ARG_MAX
limit along the lines of the typical Linux limit.

However, this new limit is artificial. Cygwin allocates all argument
and environment data on the cygheap. We only run out of ARG_MAX space
if we're out of memory resources.

Change argument size handling accordingly:
- Drop the args size check from child_info_spawn::worker.
- Return -1 from sysconf (SC_ARG_MAX), i. e., the argument size limit
  is undefined.
- Change argv handling in class av, so that a failing cmalloc is not
fatal. This allows the parent process to return E2BIG if it's out
  of cygheap resources.
- In the child, add a check around the new malloc call, so that it
doesn't result in a SEGV if the child process gets unexpectedly into
an ENOMEM situation at this point. In this (unlikely) case, proceed
with the original __argv array instead. Add comment to explain why.

Takashi Yano 44f73c5a62 Cygwin: Fix segfalt when too many command line args are specified.
Previously, the number of command line args was not checked for
cygwin process. Due to this, segmentation fault was caused if too
many command line args are specified.
https://cygwin.com/pipermail/cygwin/2023-August/254333.html

Since char *argv[argc + 1] is placed on the stack in dll_crt0_1(),
STATUS_STACK_OVERFLOW occurs if the stack does not have enough
space.

With this patch, char *argv[] is placed in heap instead of stack
and ARG_MAX is increased from 32000 to 2097152 which is default
value of Linux. The argument length is also compared with ARG_MAX
and spawnve() returns E2BIG if it is too long.

Cygwin: Restore signal handlers on thread cancellation during system()
Add back the restoration of signal handlers modified during system() on
thread cancellation.

Removed in 3cb9da14 which describes it as 'ill-conceived' (additional
context doesn't appear to be available).

We use the internal implementation helpers for the pthread cleanup
chain, so we can neatly tuck it inside the object, and keep the point
when we restore the signal handlers the same. (The
pthread_cleanup_push/pop() functions are implemented as macros which
must appear in the same lexical scope.)

Corinna Vinschen 339bb6e932 Cygwin: stop handling files with .com suffix like .exe files
.com is a remnant from the past. There are only five executables
left:

  chcp.com
  format.com
  mode.com
  more.com
  tree.com

Calling them on the command line already requires to use the
suffix anyway. So drop useless .com test from the execve test
for scripts (they are handled earlier in the same function
as executables) and do not handle them like .exe suffixes in
other functions.

Corinna Vinschen 7f42498be6 Cygwin: rename __cygwin_environ and drop env redirection via cur_environ()
Back in early Cygwin development a function based access to the
environment was exported, the internal environ in Cygwin was called
__cygwin_environ and cur_environ() was used to access the environment
indirectly . The history of that necessity is not documented,
but kept in i686 for backward compatibility.

The x86_64 port eventually used __cygwin_environ directly and exported
it as DATA under the usual name environ.

We don't need the i686 workaround anymore, so just rename
__cygwin_environ to environ, drop the cur_environ() macro and
simply export environ under its own name.

Corinna Vinschen 1b86dd7d8c Cygwin: make sure exec'ed process exists early in process list
killpg(pgid, 0) (or kill_pgrp(pgid, si_signo=0), in signal.cc)
fails (returns -1) even when there is a process in the process
group pgid, if the process is in the middle of spawnve(), see

  https://cygwin.com/pipermail/cygwin/2022-May/251479.html

When exec'ing a process the assumption is that the exec'ed process creates its
own symlink (in pinfo::thisproc() in pinfo.cc). If the exec'ing process
calls NtClose on it's own winpid symlink, but the exec'ed process didn't
progress enough into initialization, there's a slim chance that neither
the exec'ing process, nor the exec'ed process has a winpid symlink
attached.

Always create the winpid symlink in spawn.cc, even for exec'ed Cygwin
processes. Make sure to dup the handle into the new process, and stop
creating the winpid symlink in exec'ed processes.

Takashi Yano e9c96f0a6d Cygwin: pipe: Avoid deadlock for non-cygwin writer.
- As mentioned in commit message of the commit b531d6b0, if multiple
writers including non-cygwin app exist, the non-cygwin app cannot
detect pipe closure on the read side when the pipe is created by
system account or the the pipe creator is running as service.
This is because query_hdl which is held in write side also is a
read end of the pipe, so the pipe is still alive for the non-cygwin
app even after the reader is closed.

To avoid this problem, this patch lets all processes in the same
process group close query_hdl using newly introduced internal signal
__SIGNONCYGCHLD when non-cygwin app is started.

Takashi Yano f6db6f52ae Cygwin: pinfo: Fix exit code for non-cygwin apps which reads console.
- The recent commit "Cygwin: pinfo: Fix exit code when non-cygwin app

is reading the console, it will not return STATUS_CONTROL_C_EXIT

This patch solves this issue by setting sigExeced to SIGINT in

does not terminated within predetermined time period. The reason is
that the app does not seem to be terminated by the signal sigExeced.

  1) Setup for cygwin apps, started from non-cygwin app, is done
     in fhandler_console::post_open_setup(), which overrides
     fhandler_base::post_open_setup() called from dtable.cc.
  2) Cleanup for cygwin app is done in fhandler_console::close().
  3) Setup for cygwin apps is also in fhandler_console::bg_check(),
which overrides fhandler_termios::bg_check(). This is called
on read(), write() and select() for console. It is necessary
if cygwin and non-cygwin apps are started simultaneously in
     the same process group.
  4) Setup for non-cygwin apps is done in spawn.cc via
     fhandler_console::setup_console_for_non_cygwin_app().
  5) Cleanup for non-cygwin app is done in spawn.cc vid
     fhandler_console::cleanup_console_for_non_cygwin_app().
  6) Setup for non-cygwin app started by GDB is done in
     fhandler_console::set_console_mode_to_native().
  7) No explicit cleanup for non-cygwin app started by GDB, because
console mode is automatically reset to tty::cygwin on read()/

Takashi Yano f79a46112e Cygwin: pipe: Use read pipe handle for select() on write pipe.
- Usually WriteQuotaAvailable retrieved by NtQueryInformationFile()
on the write side reflects the space available in the inbound buffer
on the read side. However, if a pipe read is currently pending,
WriteQuotaAvailable on the write side is decremented by the number
of bytes the read side is requesting. So it's possible (even likely)
that WriteQuotaAvailable is 0, even if the inbound buffer on the
read side is not full. This can lead to a deadlock situation:
The reader is waiting for data, but select on the writer side
assumes that no space is available in the read side inbound buffer.

Currently, to avoid this stuation, read() does not request larger
block than pipe size - 1. However, this mechanism does not take
effect if the reader side is non-cygwin app.

The only reliable information is available on the read side, so
fetch info from the read side via the pipe-specific query handle
  (query_hdl) introduced.

If the query_hdl (read handle) is kept in write side, writer can
not detect closure of read pipe. Therefore, raw_write() counts
write handle and query_hdl. If they are equal, only the pairs of
write handle and query_hdl are alive. In this case, raw_write()
  returns EPIPE and raises SIGPIPE.

- Nonblocking pipes (PIPE_NOWAIT) are not well handled by non-Cygwin
tools, so convert pipe handles to PIPE_WAIT handles when spawning
  a non-Cygwin process.

Johannes Schindelin 2533912fc7 Cygwin: Allow executing Windows Store's "app execution aliases"
The Windows Store version of Python (and apparently other Windows Store
applications) install a special reparse point called "app execution
alias" into the user's `PATH`.

These applications can be executed without any problem, but they cannot
be read as if they were files. This trips up Cygwin's beautiful logic that
tries to determine whether we're about to execute a Cygwin executable or
not: instead of executing the application, it will fail, saying
"Permission denied".

Let's detect this situation (`NtOpenFile()` helpfully says that this
operation is not supported on this reparse point type), and simply skip
the logic: Windows Store apps are not Cygwin executables (and even if
they were, it is unlikely that they would come with a compatible
`cygwin1.dll` or `msys-2.0.dll`).

- PTY has a problem that the key input, which is typed during windows

beacuse pty has two input pipes, one is for cygwin apps and the other

shell reads input from the first input pipe. This issue had been
fixed once by commit 29431fcb, however, the new implementation of

however, exits immediately unlike previous implementation.

Takashi Yano via Cygwin-patches 72770148ad Cygwin: pty: Prevent pty from changing code page of parent console.
- After commit 232fde0e, pty changes console code page when the first
non-cygwin app is executed. If pty is started in real console device,
pty changes the code page of root console. This causes very annoying
result because changing code page changes the font of command prompt
if console is in legacy mode. This patch avoids this by creating a
new invisible console for the first pty started in console device.

Takashi Yano via Cygwin-patches 85ea2614f5 Cygwin: pty: Make close_pseudoconsole() be a static member function.
- The function close_pseudoconsole() should be static so that it
can be safely called in spawn.cc even after the fhandler_pty_slave
instance has been deleted. That is, there is a problem with the
current code. This patch fixes the issue.

Takashi Yano via Cygwin-patches 974e6d76d8 Cygwin: console: Revise the code to switch xterm mode.
- If application changes the console mode, mode management introduced
by commit 10d8c278 will be corrupted. For example, stdout of jansi
v2.0.1 or later is piped to less, jansi resets the xterm mode flag
ENABLE_VIRTUAL_TERMINA_PROCESSING when jansi is terminated. This
causes garbled output in less because less needs this flag enabled.
  This patch fixes the issue.

Takashi Yano via Cygwin-patches c2c33e4d67 Cygwin: pty: Skip term_has_pcon_cap() if pseudo console is disabled.
- This patch skips unnecessary term_has_pcon_cap() call if pseudo
  console is disabled.

Jeremy Drake via Cygwin-patches 21ec498d7f cygwin: use CREATE_DEFAULT_ERROR_MODE in spawn
This allows native processes to get Windows-default error handling
behavior (such as invoking the registered JIT debugger).

Takashi Yano via Cygwin-patches 4e08fe42c9 Cygwin: pty: Disable pseudo console if TERM does not have CSI6n.
- Pseudo console internally sends escape sequence CSI6n (query cursor
position) on startup of non-cygwin apps. If the terminal does not
support CSI6n, CreateProcess() hangs waiting for response. To prevent
hang, this patch disables pseudo console if the terminal does not
have CSI6n. This is checked on the first execution of non-cygwin
  app using the following steps.
    1) Check if the terminal support ANSI escape sequences by looking
into terminfo database. If terminfo has cursor_home (ESC [H),
the terminal is supposed to support ANSI escape sequences.
    2) If the terminal supports ANSI escape sequneces, send CSI6n for
a test and wait for a responce for 40ms.
    3) If there is a responce within 40ms, CSI6n is supposed to be
       supported.
Also set-title capability is checked, and removes escape sequence
for setting window title if the terminal does not have the set-
  title capability.

Corinna Vinschen 163daed37c Cygwin: drop PROC_DETACHED_CHILD flag
pinfo::remember with the detach parameter set to true is
the only way to call proc_subproc with PROC_DETACHED_CHILD.
This call is exclusively used in spawn to set up a pinfo for
a detached child, and that pinfo goes out of scope right
afterwards without any further action.

Drop the flag and drop the detach parameter from pinfo::remember.

Corinna Vinschen 0a31ad6f4c Cygwin: fix up proc_subproc flags and matching pinfo methods
After patch 23a779bf3d
"Cygwin: pinfo: stop remember doing reattach",
PROC_ADDCHILD actually just sets up a new child, mirroring
PROC_DETACHED_CHILD. The actual attaching of the child is
performed by action PROC_REATTACH_CHILD or pinfo::reattach
respectively.

To better reflect what's going on, rename PROC_REATTACH_CHILD
to PROC_ATTACH_CHILD and rename pinfo::reattach to pinfo::attach.
For better readability change PROC_ADDCHILD to PROC_ADD_CHILD.
Fix comments accordingly.
